Viking Research Network

MEMBERS

Dr Katrina Burge (Independent Scholar) - Coordinator
Lisa Bennett (Postgraduate, Flinders)
Shane McLeod (Postgraduate, UWA)
Leon Wild (Postgraduate, Sydney)

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

The Viking Research Network encourages and facilitates collaboration between scholars working within the field of Viking Studies. Its current members are emerging Australian scholars with diverse interests and skills who use the VRN as a means of sharing research, ideas and support.

EVENTS (INCLUDING MEETINGS AND WORKSHOPS)

Meeting:

All VRN members attended a meeting in Sydney early in 2008 to discuss current research projects and future plans.

Conferences and symposia:

November 2007: The VRN was instrumental in organising the symposium "Vikings and their Enemies" which was held in Melbourne, attended by about 80 people.

April 2008: All VRN members also attended the Sydney symposium on "Old Norse-Icelandic Studies".

PUBLICATIONS

The VRN has acted as publisher for the Vikings and their Enemies: Proceedings of a Symposium held in Melbourne, 24 November 2008, edited by Katrina Burge. The first print run of this volume has sold out.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Two members of the VRN had a self-funded research trip to Ireland, where they worked on runic and ogam inscriptions, as well as meeting with Irish scholars with interests in this field.

One VRN member has carried out archaeological work in Scandinavia this year, and another has attended palaegraphy workshops at the Arni Magnusson Institute in Copenhagen.

The results of these trips are shared with other members of the Cluster.
