Web resources: A selection of useful links

Organizations & associations - Australia

ANZAMEMS - the Australian and New Zealand Association of Medieval and Early Modern Studies - is the key organization in the field in Australia, with members drawn from a wide range of disciplines. It hosts an annual conference and publishes a high-quality, fully refereed journal, Parergon, which has international subscribers and contributors. Information about Parergon, and the full text of its book reviews, are available from the ANZAMEMS Web site.
AULLA - the Australasian Universities Language and Literature Association - brings together Australian researchers in European languages and literatures. It hosts an annual conference and publishes the journal AUMLA.
The Australian and New Zealand Shakespeare Association - is an important example of the specialist organizations which focus on a particular area of Early European research. It organizes an annual conference and is a co-sponsor of the eighth World Shakespeare Congress, which will be held in Brisbane in July 2006.

The Australian Early Medieval Association  encourages and supports the study of the early medieval period by facilitating the exchange of ideas and information amongst members. The Association holds an annual conference and produces refereed publications. 

The Australian Association for Byzantine Studies aims to foster links between scholars, students and laypersons within Australia and New Zealand who are interested in Byzantium and related fields.

There are numerous international or national organizations which are active in this field. A few of particular interest are:

Academic centres - Australia

The Centre for Medieval Studies at the University of Sydney coordinates interdisciplinary activities in one of the university's nominated areas of major research strength. As well as hosting workshops and symposia, it has a programme of Visiting Fellowships and collaborates with the leading European publisher Brepols in the book series Making the Middle Ages.

The Centre for Studies in Religion and Theology at Monash University has a strong focus on medieval and early modern theology and religious history.

 

Academic centres - international

In New Zealand, the Mediaeval and Early Modern Studies Centre (MEDEMS) at the University of Auckland has close connections with Australian researchers.

Among the many research centres active in Europe and North America, the following are particularly important:

International Medieval Institute, University of Leeds

International Congress on Medieval Studies, Kalamazoo, MI.

The European Graduate School for Training in Economic and Social-Historical Research provides a particularly interesting approach to postgraduate training.

 

Infrastructure - databases, publications and Web sites

The ProQuest group of companies are active in digital publishing for early European research, under their UMI and Chadwyck-Healey imprints. Products of particular interest to the Network are:

Early English Books Online (more than 100,000 early printed books)

Literature Online (more than 300,000 literary texts and reference works)

 

Brepols is another significant international publisher in the field, producing both digital and printed materials:

Making the Middle Ages is a print series published in conjunction with the Centre for Medieval Studies at the University of Sydney.

Brepolis: a range of specialized datasets and electronic reference works, including In Principio, Vetus Latina, and the Library of Latin Texts.

 

There are thousands of freely available Web sites which relate to one or more aspects of early European research. Their quality varies considerably, but many are of considerable research value. The best starting-points for exploring these sites are:
